The Port Harbor, also known as Port Vell is the area at the end of the city of Barcelona that is closest to the Mediterranean Sea. It starts from the Columbus monument, built toward the end of the 1800’s and located at the end of the Ramblas, and goes all the way towards the Barceloneta. This district offers a mix between the Barcelona beach and the exciting city center. There is so much to do and see! The Mirador de Colom is a great place to take pictures as the emblematic Christopher Columbus points to the “New World” and there are metal lions at the base of the statue that make for a fun picture. It is funny to note that in reality Christopher Columbus is not pointing toward the Americas but somewhere in Algeria, in Northern Africa. Other points of interest are walking along the Rambla del Mar, which is the extension of the Ramblas taking you onto the water to the Maremagnum shopping center. There is a big Imax theatre here, the Barcelona Aquarium and many opportunities to take a boat tour or lounge about just watching the boats. The Barcelona Aquarium, by the way, is the biggest in Europe with over 8000 fish and 11 sharks. There is a green area in front of the Imax and the Aquarium that is quite nice on sunny days. A noteworthy aspect of the Port Vell and Port harbor are the famous statues located on the boardwalk. For example the most famout and most welcoming is the Gambrinus by Javier Mariscal. This happy enormous lobster smiles at you as you pass by. Barcelona’s Face is a sculpture on the end of this boardwalk designed by Roy Lichtenstein. He was inspired by Antoni Gaudi’s tile smashing and redesigning technic called “trencadis” and did his own version with red ceramic tiles. If you are interested in the history of Catalunya, you can visit the Museu d’ Història de Catalunya which was opened in 1996 and focuses on showing people Catalan history and culture. If you like hand made gifts to take home, the Port vell has a section before the Rambla del Mar that is dedicated to tent stands where people can sell their hand made artifacts. The Barcelona boardwalk is a great place to go running, skating, biking or have a stroll with your family or friends. Since this is a newer part of the city, the apartments tend to be bigger and newer. There are also many great restaurants specializing in seafood and paella in this area. It is a very action packed and family friendly location to be in!
