FIRA DE SANTA LLÚCIA
Place: Avenida de la Catedral in Gothic area
Date: 24.11. – 23.12 (10.30am – 10.30pm)
This is Barcelona’s most well-known market, the classic Christmas market. It is specific to Christmas time, with a large percentage of the stalls presenting typical Christmas sales like trees, decorations and mistletoe. You can get the Christmas Caga Tió there – a log full of tradition that plays an important role in Catalan Christmases. Enjoy the authenticity! The lack of gluwein (mulled wine) and bratwurst (German style hot dog) may come as a disappointment.
There is also a section of the market named ‘Artesania’, which means ‘crafted by hand’. Within this section you will find a wide range of stalls selling various hand-made and artisan products such as jewellery, toys, leather goods and ornaments.
Apart from the Artesania section, the stalls are similar and more expensive than other markets. However, there is an undeniably true Christmas feel to the market – particularly in the evening, when the lights of the Cathedral are turned on and give a very nice picture.
FIRA DE NADAL A LA SGRADA FAMILIA
Place: Sagrada Familia church, Eixample area
Date: 25.11 – 23.12. (10.00am – 10.00pm)
This Christmas market is in the gardens outside of the Sagrada Familia. It is more spread out than the Fira de Santa Llúcia but the products are similar products to the market above. It is smaller than the Fira de Santa Llucia and not quite as atmospheric. However, it makes for an impressive setting and offers the opportunity to see the building and the market sitting at the foot of the church in one trip.
MERCAT GOTIC (FIRA DE BROCANTERS)
Place: Placa Nova, 1
Date: Every Thursday, 10.00am – 08.00pm
Every Thursday this market takes place in front of the market Santa Lucia, however it is overtaken by the Fira de Santa Llúcia (see above) during the Christmas period. It is a tiny market, consisting of approximately twenty sellers. Each table is packed with a variety of ‘curiosities’, antiques, including jewellery, postcards, ornaments, stamps, etc. Some of the antiques are quite expensive, suggesting that this is a serious antique collector’s market. The market is on one of Barcelona’s busiest shopping streets and so in the days closest to Christmas it is likely to be busy.
GRAN VIA MARKET (FIRA DE REIS DE LA GRAN VIA)
Place: Gran Via in the streets ‘Entenca’ and ‘Muntaner’
Toy Market: Close to Placa Catalunya
Craft market: Close to Placa Espanya
Date: 19.12. – 06.01, 11am – 10pm
La feria de Reyes de la Gran Via, also called ‘Sant Tomàs i Reis’ (St Thomas and Kings) and also sometimes called the Twelfth Night Fair, is Barcelona´s biggest Christmas and New Year markets for toys and handcrafted things. The Fira de Reis a la Gran Via market has around 300 markets stalls with toys and traditional ‘Reyes’ gifts like ‘carbon de azucar’ (candy coal).
COLLECTIU D’ARTESANS DE L’ALIMENTACIO
Place: Santa Maria del Pi, Gothic area
Date: All year
This is another all year round market, but has a far greater frequency during the Christmas period. In the small square, overlooked by the Church Santa Maria del Pi, it is a delightful experience. There are around twenty stalls selling groceries like honey, chocolates, cheeses, pâtés, herbs, wines and cakes. The friendly atmosphere between the traders and with the customers is definitely to mention. Prices are fair considering the high percentage of tourists and the central location.
PLAZA DE CATALUNYA CHRISTMAS FAIR
Place: Plaza Catalunya
Date: 22.12. – 04.01, 10.00am – 09.00pm
This Christmas market is nice for families and children because of the many activities and located directly on Plaça de Catalunya. The fair also includes the Responsible Consumption Fair which is a sustainable and fair trade Christmas festival promoted and organized by the Barcelona city council. The ‘3a Fira de Consum Responsable, d’Economia Social i Solidària’ offers sustainable and handmade gifts, services and activities by companies and entities to promote responsible consumption and local products.
