Find yourself wallowing in sorrow because you are missing your mom’s home made Thanksgiving dinner? I know I am! There is some hope though for those Thanksgiving abroad blues. Check out my 5 picks for where to get your turkey on in Barcelona. They are not in any special order.
So Hard Rock cafe is pretty reliable when it comes to providing some good, hard core American food but every year they make a special menu just for Thanksgiving. Here’s the menu and the price per person.
Starter: SIDE CAESAR SALAD
Hearts of romaine lettuce with croutons, Parmesan cheese and our homemade Caesar dressing
Entree: TURKEY WITH STUFFING
Specially made for Thanksgiving, our Turkey is covered in Gravy sauce with garlic smashed potatoes and Pepperidge Farm stuffing. Served with vegetables and cranberry sauce.
Dessert: PUMPKIN PIE
Thanksgiving wouldn’t be complete without it! Served with whipped cream on top.
Drink to choose among: Mineral water, Estrella Damm beer, glass of house wine or assorted sodas.
Price per person 3 Courses: 27.95 Euros
The American Society of Barcelona also does an annual Thanksgiving dinner located in different restaurants in the Barcelona. They’ve got the classic turkey, stuffing, greens, and pumpkin pie as well. Last years soiree was at the Hotel Arts. Yum! At the moment, I didn’t find information on their website as to where it is this year, so its till a mystery but if you are interested, take a look at their website at amersoc.com. I assume that they will be posting all the info soon so that people can make their reservations. In any case, at least you know that the credentials will be good because they know what Thanksgiving is all about.
Like the Hard Rock Cafe, this year they are making a special Thanksgiving menu but this one kicks the Hard Rock Cafe’s menu in the butt.
Starters: Collard greens, Mac and cheese, Deviled eggs, Chive Mashed potatoes, Freshly baked buttered rolls, and cranberry sauce
Entree: Oven roasted turkey with a cornbread mushroom stuffing and homemade gravy.
Dessert: They will have a self service bar with all of these desserts: Pumpkin pie with cinnamon whipped cream, Red velvet cake with Cream cheese frosting, sweet potato cupcakes with toasted marshmallow frosting, Apple pie, Mocha buttercream cake with caramel buttercream frosting.
This is what I am going to do this year. I am a strict vegetarian but I have decided that in the spirit of retaining American values for my Spanish family and my expatriate kids, I should start rolling up my sleeves, get down and dirty and make the freaking turkey already. Every good American knows the staple foods: collard greens, mashed potatoes, some butter rolls, cranberry sauce, the turkey with stuffing and gravy and pumpkin pie or apple pie to top it off. Turkey making sounds like running a marathon but I know that it is possible here in Barcelona. Buying a turkey is actually not so uncommon as it was before here in Barcelona. In fact, the open air local markets stock up for the thousands of current Americans that are living in Barcelona and need their turkey login. The Mercat de la Concepció, was featured in El Periodico about the number of people who buy turkeys on Thanksgiving.
Who needs the traditional Thanksgiving meal when you are in Spain? For the love of god, grab some tapas and some vino. Instead of turkey, you can have jamon de jabugo. Spain and Barcelona may not celebrate Thanksgiving, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t eat well but just different. There are many things that are just as good as mom’s stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy like croquettas, tortilla or chipirones. As long as you are with the people that you love and you can find reasons to be thankful for what you have, you already are in the spirit of a traditional Thanksgiving.
In any way that you decide to do it, ENJOY this year’s THANKSGIVING 2012!!!!
